The guild and gallery are operating much the same. There are new members with talent and enthusiasm in the gallery. They have added new work and new ideas and all round an added quality to the work on our shelves. I would like to continue posting so will be adding new posts. I will post monthly just to keep you current and as preparation for our 50th anniversary in a few years. Hope to see you soon with photos and news.</p>Parkland Potters Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12824307181029631089noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423257021263426348.post-46477299729777020372020-10-22T18:09:00.002-06:002020-10-22T18:09:38.347-06:00October and Busy<p>This month in the gallery we have featured some of the pottery made during Covid. I took a short trip around the gallery on Tuesday to see what caught my eye. My choices are only a sample of the beautiful pottery on our gallery shelves. Covid has not stopped the creativity of our potters.</p><p>I am just going to post a few today and in another post publish more photos. The first photo shows scraffito work by Clarice Cameron, a platter and bowl. The next photo is a transfer decorated egg tray by Catherine Boggs. The third photo is a stamped and stencil decorated bowl by Barb Watchman. Last is a real treasure by Cheryl Anderson. The photo does not do the crystalline tray justice. It has to be seen in person to really appreciate the crystal structures in the glaze. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEP-UDrLXdkW3rzpTdFULj44oDwt2dLGGA3yxluYjTG_e6bT7uFf4RGciKI3z099Sf1bPAc8JV8LLGjCZkn9GKVw77VvyJs8Ck3sIysmog6WinVDHyPKNjR_Qdlw0bpjIC-olum_iLP9a/s5152/DSCN1283.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3864" data-original-width="5152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEP-UDrLXdkW3rzpTdFULj44oDwt2dLGGA3yxluYjTG_e6bT7uFf4RGciKI3z099Sf1bPAc8JV8LLGjCZkn9GKVw77VvyJs8Ck3sIysmog6WinVDHyPKNjR_Qdlw0bpjIC-olum_iLP9a/s640/DSCN1283.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQjaqhURHrCL5bJvu83Sl7yyMi-3Xv8FudRPaLFub2qt2BTREmlQoXSS-9I6OPiNHC9TutKVR9YOpr1Jj5K7VMTT5EWUqzlXipElDRR9Egg5mKJO3UWywuKn8n0stv6IIIqBYv05jZcljF/s5152/DSCN1291.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="5152" data-original-width="3864" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQjaqhURHrCL5bJvu83Sl7yyMi-3Xv8FudRPaLFub2qt2BTREmlQoXSS-9I6OPiNHC9TutKVR9YOpr1Jj5K7VMTT5EWUqzlXipElDRR9Egg5mKJO3UWywuKn8n0stv6IIIqBYv05jZcljF/s640/DSCN1291.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3sV-Ocp_Pzx9ACFc4ZUziNNdQdAd75g_pde_6n03AVB9LnzFn9fflNhWGEbwsz1FRzNQE5mrCJF9oaR-xEGs8XXloecSDJ4DImN36ft-0fHbXzyNV9s20IXC7xtLNORcZhvzjQ6W0lBd/s5152/DSCN1287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3864" data-original-width="5152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3sV-Ocp_Pzx9ACFc4ZUziNNdQdAd75g_pde_6n03AVB9LnzFn9fflNhWGEbwsz1FRzNQE5mrCJF9oaR-xEGs8XXloecSDJ4DImN36ft-0fHbXzyNV9s20IXC7xtLNORcZhvzjQ6W0lBd/s640/DSCN1287.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8YBQtiailbrOP6iB1cKwxlm280zZkGKo0ubcWmYMMIZ-1wmrELJZATrlrTgmAI4PZMkk8quYlBgW-xBlJoqe_3I16GkkH-Ps6PMOuQ2FxDK6zZUdfr-NAz0b08M-GXZsVwYMapSL-s3J8/s5152/DSCN1296.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3864" data-original-width="5152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8YBQtiailbrOP6iB1cKwxlm280zZkGKo0ubcWmYMMIZ-1wmrELJZATrlrTgmAI4PZMkk8quYlBgW-xBlJoqe_3I16GkkH-Ps6PMOuQ2FxDK6zZUdfr-NAz0b08M-GXZsVwYMapSL-s3J8/s640/DSCN1296.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><p><br /></p>Parkland Potters Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12824307181029631089noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423257021263426348.post-33773684530791171942020-08-11T11:24:00.002-06:002020-08-11T11:24:40.307-06:00August Feature<p> It is hard to believe that summer is drawing to an end. It is busy as we seem to be making up for lost time or perhaps we are just forging ahead. Any way you look at it we are busy and thriving. In the gallery in June we had a display by Brenda Wylie feature "Things On the Lighter Side".<br />

Now that the raku kiln is ready testing has begun and protocols are being established for it's use. Dianne had great success with the work she fired in testing the new kiln.<br />

This month in the gallery Holly Rolls has her work on display. Holly always has a beautiful display of her pottery. She is not afraid to make wonderful large pots.<br />

We are preparing for Christmas in July. This is an opportunity to join with other local businesses and take our pottery to the outdoors(weather permitting). I don't think the coupon applies to this sale but don't be afraid to ask and use it for in store purchases.<br />

Tammy shared her wood fire kiln and taught a group of guild members how she fires her kiln. They worked in groups and fired 12 hours to complete the firing. There were some great results and learning that will help with a future firing. So look forward to seeing these pieces in the gallery.<br />

We are pleased to have the gallery running close to normal with the added features of curbside pick up and sales from our Facebook page. <span style="background-color: white; color: cyan;"> Parkland Potters Guild - Crooked Pot Gallery</span><br />
<br />
I just wanted to add a photo showing the process that pottery goes through from a ball of clay to a finished piece. Depending on the decorating process a few more steps may be added. When you are curious about why we say it may take up to 3 month to complete a piece this will tell you why. Some independent potters can rush the process with forced drying and a smaller kiln. We have large kilns and 65 members with pottery waiting to fire so it does take us longer at times.<br />

It is summer in the city and in an effort to make things better we have street closures that make access a little difficult. We anticipate this will last all summer. There is a parking lot on the west side of the building and the front of the building is open so access is close. It is a little inconvenient and because we missed most of May we are extending our coupon until the end of August. That means that if you spend $50.00 you will be able to save $10.00 all summer long. This is an exceptional opportunity so please take advantage when looking for gifts or just a gift to yourself.<br />

So many of our potters took the time at home to create and try new techniques. We plan a show in September to show you what we did during that time so I think there will be much to look forward to in the coming months.<br />

The gallery will reopen to the public on May 19. The guild is open with some restrictions which have been sent to members. Our Facebook page allows the public to order from that page with curbside delivery. Many potters have been working from home but it will be nice to have some restrictions lifted. We are all cautious and will do our best to help keep everyone safe and feeling comfortable using our facilities. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a workshop more than this one. Not only is Greg a master potter but a master at glazing as well. There were many times where my mind could not take in all that was presented. He was so generous and tried to present as much as he could. He left us with an understanding of how to go about making our own glazes and inspiration to take us well into the next year and beyond.<br />
<br />
We had a wonderful review of throwing with multiple hints thrown in to help us improve our throwing.<br />

We moved the buffet table to the glaze room giving room for only the refreshment table and gift table in the throwing room. The weather was agreeable so we had a large turn out and the tables filled with party going potters. As always the meal was delicious with such a great variety of dishes. We had to modify the gift exchange rules to accommodate only one steal per gift. It shortened the game but still allowed for the rivalry that makes the game fun. It is always an enjoyable evening and end to the year.<br />
<br />
We took time to discuss the up coming year's list of workshops. In the spring we will be sponsoring Sarah Pike demonstrating hand building workshop, Greg Daley demonstration glazing workshop, our own Tammy Parks Legge with a hands on wood firing workshop and an extended intensive workshop. Registration details will be given at our January business meeting. Members will be given first opportunity to register. Any open spaces will then be advertised to other potters.<br />
<br />
I just did something I never do. I deleted 75 pictures from the gallery and Christmas party. So sorry they are lost forever.<br />
<br />
Class registration for this coming year is January 4th. The registration information will be posted separately.<br />

Proceeds form the decorations and display go again to the Kinnette and Kinsman Christmas Hampers. This is a very successful way for all of us to support the community. The coupon is again in effect so showing it to the sales person in the gallery will give you a $10.00 discount on a $50.00 purchase.<br />
<br />
Culture Day pottery is ready in the gallery with the exception of a few pieces that are in the kiln right now and will be fired and in the gallery next Tuesday. We keep finding trays but are sure they are all now completed.<br />

Every year we do our part to help community members participate by opening the guild to the public. I must say that this year has been the most successful in all my time participating in the event. We had 3 times more participants in completing projects. It was a busy time but really fun giving community members an opportunity to work with clay. Children are always eager to get their hands dirty and jump right in the the projects but this year we had many adults equally ready to try hand building as well as getting really into using the wheels. We only had a few wheels set up for people to try their hand at wheel throwing so there were line ups as some had their first attempts to complete a wheel project.<br />
<br />
Throughout the event guild members challenged themselves and each other making the tallest, smallest, and largest pots. Friendly competition, a trophy and best of all bragging rights make this a coveted annual event.<br />
<br />
Because we were too busy to take photos the Town of Stony Plain shared the following photos of going's on in the guild:<br />

We open the guild to the public and ask them to participate in activities. This year we are holding our own throw down with potters competing for bragging rights and a trophy. It is a fun event, fun to watch and fun to participate against each other. We have clay activities for children visiting the event. So if you are in the area drop in for a fun day and take in other events around town. Here is our schedule.<br />
<br />
Check out the gallery for a breathtaking display by Sandra Thornton. See the poster at the bottom of the page and be impressed with the beautiful images of Sandra's pottery. You are invited to a reception Saturday October 5 from 1-4.<br />

Our past president was replaced with a new president and we are so thankful to Jen Lloyd for her 2 years as vice president and then 2 years as president. It was a big commitment and she carried it off with great skill and grace. Our new executive consists of Jan Haines as president, Lynnette Lukay as vice president, Brenda Wylie as secretary, Marian Majeau as treasure and Jackie Billows and Tammy Parks Legge as members at large. So we are in good hands.<br />
<br />
There was much discussed with up coming events, new equipment, Culture Days and the current display in the gallery. We choose the The Kinsman and Kinettes for this year's Christmas Charity. The evening ended with a reception to welcome us back. It looks like another busy year.<br />
<br />
If you drive past the back of the building you will see our new raku kiln. So many people contributed to it's construction that I will tell more at a later date and add pictures. <br />
<br />
In the gallery a very timely display by Brenda Wylie.<br />

Ursula is a long time member of the guild contributing as far back as the mural in kinsman park and the oldest member displaying in the Crooked Pot Gallery. We all had the opportunity to celebrate such a big milestone in Ursula's life. Pictures were circulated and we had the time to review many delightful times spent together. Thanks to Bob and Tracy for organizing the event.<br />

Gifts and wedding gifts are very popular right now as customers look for unique gifts. There is such a large supply of pieces that everyone is spoiled for choice and choosing takes some time.<br />
<br />
In the gallery the June show just finished with July's just beginning. Tammy Parks Legge has a display of very interesting pieces from platters to mugs using differing techniques that are a departure from her usual work. Tammy likes using her display to challenge herself so you will be seeing some of her work change as she introduces some of the new techniques into her regular work. We always like to see new work from Jan Haines.<br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Most of Cicansky’s artworks find roots in Garlic Flats, an area that
once comprised the east end of Regina. Born in 1935, Cicansky’s first childhood
home was near the southwest corner of Victoria Avenue and Park Street, a
325-square-foot house his dad built, “smaller than a current garage.” There’s a
strip mall there now.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Studying ceramics at University of California Davis in the late 1960s,
Cicansky was encouraged in his artwork to draw inspiration from life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“The idea was that you were expected to be who you are and create work
that represented your experience in the world,” says Cicansky. “Whereas most
other institutions, including the one here in Regina, they were all hooked up
on abstract expressionism.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">From clay, Cicansky created jars full of vivid fruit and vegetable preserves.
He made shovels and heads of cabbage. He sculpted men and women, inspired by
his Romanian immigrant parents and grandmother. He built outhouses.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Building functioning outhouses comprised Cicansky’s first business in
1949, when he was the 14-year-old “president” of the Garlic Flats Syndicate.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">There was no water or sewer service east of Broad Street, where the
neighbourhood officially called Germantown began.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky was “hand-smart” from the time he was six years old. His father
Frank Cicansky (a name anglicized at immigration in 1926, from Francisc
Czekanski) was a blacksmith and artist. Three of Frank’s creations — a
windmill, a rocking horse and a wooden buggy — are among the many artworks in
Victor’s south Regina living room.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“I was always working in the shop with him,” says Cicansky. “He’d nail a
board on the saw horse, mark it off with a pencil, and then show me how to cut
each one off.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“So I learned early and I seemed to have a natural talent for making and
creating things.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Young Victor built chicken coops and doghouses, until a neighbour’s
fateful question one day: “Can you make me an outhouse?”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky used elevator grain doors, to which he nailed patterned tin
cutouts, all salvaged from the junkyard (the same junkyard where he’d recover
headlights from old cars to use as helmets during play-wars with other
neighbourhood kids).<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“I wanted a good look, and the junk yard was great because there’s all
kinds of stuff in there. So it just drove your imagination. Mine anyway.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Twenty-some years later, Cicansky learned about “an honourable branch of
study called scatology that reveals a great deal about human settlements by
examining the contents of fossilized feces,” he writes in his 120-page book.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“What could be more fossilized than fired clay? So I set out to document
the history of the Garlic Flats outhouses.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Julia Krueger, co-curator of the MAG exhibition, points out there are no
outhouses left today in the neighbourhood, “effectively erasing a part of
Regina’s past that othered and suppressed a specific area of the city by way of
water politics.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Garlic Flats was home to mostly Romanian immigrants from Bukovina, who
were treated as second-class citizens.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky quit school at Balfour Tech after finishing Grade 9 (although
he later matriculated and got university degrees in education, literature and
fine arts).<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“Schools were colonial,” he says, and so was the thinking. He recalls a
crush in Grade 7, an “English” girl whose mother believed “he’s not one of our
kind.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky spent hours upon hours in the Prince of Wales Library at 14th
and Broder, reading and “trying to understand why some people thought they were
better than others.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">A commission in 1977 for the provincial government’s new Sturdy-Stone
office building, “The Old Working Class,” depicts a series of huge terra cotta
sculptures — “the working class looking down” from above the elevators.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">In these piece, Cicansky preserves a history, just like with his
outhouses.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“By fossilizing his memory of the outhouses in east end Regina, in the
form of a ceramic miniature,” says Krueger, “he makes visible something that
has effectively been erased or sanitized from our urban landscape.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Another feature largely lost in city landscapes is the garden.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“When supermarkets came in, then people got lazy,” says Cicansky.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“When I was a kid, everybody gardened … I could walk from Garlic Flats
where I grew up to Wetmore School, over a mile, and every backyard had a
garden. Every backyard. People grew their own food.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Beyond their own yards, the community rented land from the City of
Regina, north of Victoria Avenue and the adjacent Canadian National Railroad
tracks.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“That’s where we planted our major crops of potatoes and root
vegetables, and sometimes patches of corn. And the ditches along the (railway)
usually always had water in them, so there was a source of water.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Planting gardens was just what people did back then. It’s what Cicansky
has always done. But even since the 1960s, he has recognized a radicalness to
the act.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“For some reason, people don’t want to talk about climate change. And I
contend that as an individual you have to do something. And for me it’s
gardening,” says Cicansky.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“And if millions of people started to garden, dig up their lawns …
things begin to change.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Fran died, among the first tasks was to tear out the lawn.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Looking out from the deck, there’s a pond to the right. Nearby, there’s
a head-shaped terra cotta planterwith a face: It’s a Cicansky self-portrait
from 1995, like three that are on view at the MacKenzie.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">(This head is empty, while the gallery’s have succulents and cacti
escaping their skulls. “Because we are all connected and interdependent, I try
to experience what it would be like to be a plant growing in the garden,”
Cicansky states.)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">The entirety of his yard is a garden, including a plot for each of his
four grandchildren to grow whatever they like. Cicansky is satisfied to know
where their food is coming from.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Lamb’s quarters, a favourite salad green, comes up in planters. Elena
Gafencu, Cicansky’s “Bunica” (grandmother), called it lobada in Romanian.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“It’s like spinach. Better than spinach, actually. And it grows really
tall, and it’s the first green that comes up — or burgundy — in the spring,”
says Cicansky.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Bunica was the “the booze queen of the east end,” Cicansky says,
laughing. Her occupation led Frank to her daughter Mary, his would-be wife and
Victor’s mother.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Bunica kindled Cicansky’s love of gardening early on. She would squeeze
the soil and smell it; she’d place freshly picked produce onto chairs.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“As a youngster, I saw Bunica as a force of nature who would transform
the garden soil she was standing on into a garden of delights. And I felt the
urge to do likewise,” he writes.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky’s predilection for clay began in childhood, too.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">

to be a lake bottom,” says Cicansky.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“And when you’re kids and you’re running around (with) bare feet on
muddy days, this gumbo comes squishing up between your toes.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Prairie gumbo was his first medium. “We modelled little animals, we
modelled little buildings.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Visiting his brother-in-law Joe Varro at the University of British
Columbia in summer 1960, Cicansky threw his first pot in the studio where Varro
was a pottery teacher’s assistant.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">That led to Cicansky’s serious pursuit of ceramics. He took a class from
Patricia Wiens and Beth Hone. He studied under Jack Sures at (what would
become) the University of Regina. But Cicansky wasn’t content with conventional
pottery — even asking himself the question, “What the hell are you doing here
throwing mugs?”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">He rebelled in class: He wanted his pieces to be non-functional.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“I wasn’t interested in becoming a potter,” says Cicansky. “I was
interested in clay as a sculptural material.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“Jack would say ‘make 100 cups,’ so I’d make 100 cups; I’d make a really
big platter. And then I’d glaze them … all in one big mass, sitting on the
plate. So you couldn’t use any of them. It was just a big cups sculpture.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“I’d make casseroles and I’d put zippered tops on them.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">“He was continually subverting expectations of pottery by denying
function,” says MacKenzie curator Timothy Long. “Ruining things, gluing cups
together so that he couldn’t drink out of them, or making pots that he would
kick across the floor until they were bruised and beaten.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky attended a summer class at Haystack Mountain School of Art in
Maine, where Fran took weaving and Vic took ceramics. There, he met Bob Arneson
— the “father of funk art” — who encouraged Cicansky to go west.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Vic and Fran took leaves from their jobs with Regina Public Schools (she
was a music consultant, and he taught at the Central Collegiate arts high
school). He studied ceramics at U of C Davis. She studied music at Sacramento
State University.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">They weren’t long returned to Regina before moving to Craven, where they
renovated a 1917 schoolhouse as their home and planned a huge garden. They
planted 365 trees and shrubs, one for each day of the year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky’s studio was an addition to the original home’s structure. It’s
a big room in white, with splashes of colour from jars of paints and glazes,
works in progress and finished products. Theres the maquette for the Grow

their ceramic replicas.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Cicansky wakes up each day at 5 a.m., does tai chi and qigong, has
breakfast, and is in the studio by 8 a.m., where he stays until 5 p.m. —
barring breaks for gardening.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

It was busy at the guild yesterday but some of us only dropped in for lunch on our way to other activities and to share what we have been doing. One thing that I thought was of interest was a new tool at Lee Valley. I dropped in to pick up a gardening hoe and was surprised by their video display of this interesting peeling tool. Some of you may be familiar with it but have never used it for this purpose. Maybe we should be looking at the multiple uses of out clay tools.<br />
